Graphite & nodularity
for every cast iron you pour

Form classification I–VI, nodule size and count, nodularity percentage — plus lamellar and vermicular analysis. The numbers your foundry customers ask for, measured the way the standards describe them.

Capabilities

What the module does

Classification

  • Graphite form I–VI per ISO 945-1 — from lamellar flakes to fully spheroidal nodules
  • Nodularity % — the single number that qualifies a ductile iron heat
  • Nodule size and count with per-field distribution
  • Lamellar & vermicular analysis for grey and compacted graphite irons

Workflow & output

  • Unetched fields analyzed directly — graphite reads dark on the bright polished matrix
  • Calibrated sizing — particle dimensions in true µm, tied to the engaged objective
  • Field accumulation across the casting section
  • Excel & PDF reports with distributions, letterhead and embedded micrographs
MT-IAS Pro — Graphite & Nodularity · Field 1
MT-IAS Pro nodularity analysis on an unetched ductile iron field: accepted nodules marked green and rejected particles red, 781 nodules of 832 objects, nodularity 93.87%, roundness distribution histogram, Excel/PDF report buttons, and the live Nikon MA200 panel
The real workspace: 832 particles detected on the unetched field, 781 accepted as nodules (green) — nodularity 93.87%, with the roundness distribution and one-click Excel/PDF reporting below.
Procedure

From polished field to nodularity %

  1. Capture unetched — graphite analysis works on the as-polished surface; capture straight from the live camera tab.
  2. Detect graphite — particles are segmented from the matrix automatically, sized in calibrated µm.
  3. Classify forms — each particle is assigned a form (I–VI); borderline particles are flagged for review.
  4. Compute — nodularity %, nodule count and size distribution, per field and accumulated.
  5. Report — one click to Excel or PDF on your letterhead, distributions and micrographs included.

Common questions

Which graphite standards does MT-IAS Pro support?

ASTM A247 and ISO 945-1. The module classifies graphite form I–VI, measures nodule size and count, and computes nodularity percentage — plus lamellar and vermicular analysis for grey and compacted irons.

What does the module report for ductile iron?

Nodularity %, nodule count, size distribution and per-field form classification — exported to Excel or PDF on your letterhead with the micrographs embedded.

Does it handle grey and compacted graphite iron too?

Yes. Lamellar (flake) and vermicular (compacted) analysis is part of the same module, so one workflow covers the whole cast iron family.

How is nodularity actually calculated?

From the classified particle population — the fraction of graphite area in nodular forms. The full method, with the form classes and what moves the number, is in our explainer: Nodularity, measured.
